The Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda’s most well-known and is the best place to see their famous mountain gorillas. The best way to see these creatures is by going gorilla trekking with an experienced guide. As well as the mountain gorillas you can also see the endangered golden monkeys, an experience you’ll remember a long time after you’ve left.

Akagera National Park is the only park in Rwanda that offers a traditional safari option. The park offers good wildlife opportunities with beautiful scenery with its rolling hills, savannah plains to the north and lakes and papyrus swamps to the east. The park includes large protected wetlands and is home to 8,000 animals. This is also a great park to visit for birdlife with over 480 species of bird.

Nyungwe National Park is home to 13 species of primate including colobus monkeys and chimpanzees which can be tracked throughout the park. As you trek through the forests colobus monkeys can sometimes be seen in their hundreds amongst the trees with their numbers thought to be the highest worldwide.

Holidays in Rwanda can be scheduled all year round but the best times to travel are during the dry season which happens between June-September and December-February. If you are planning to track gorillas on your holiday you will need to plan it well in advance and obtain a permit.
