The Lower Zambezi is a huge rift in the earth’s crust where a river has started to flow through. The volcanic soils rich in minerals have been deposited by the river resulting in lush green vegetation. The park is made up of rich grasslands dotted with leadwoods, acacias, ebonies and figs.

The park offers a wide variety of activities. Most of the lodges in the area provide 2 activities a day with one early in the morning and the second late afternoon.
This leaves you plenty of time for relaxing, taking a long lunch or a dip in the pool. As well as traditional game drives the park also has boat trips exploring the Zambezi where you can spot hippos, crocodile and a wide variety of birds. There is also fishing opportunities on the Zambezi (on a catch and release basis).
The Zambezi has a good numbers of game, buffalo and elephant are common sightings and move freely between Zimbabwe and Zambia. There are large populations of impala as well as kudu, eland, zebra, wildebeest, waterbuck and bushbuck.
In the rivers hippos and crocodiles can be seen as well as basking in the sun on the riverbanks. Major predators in the Zambezi include lion, leopard and spotted hyena. The large herds of buffalo attract the lions and the large trees and varied terrain suits the leopards.
The park has a large amount of bird species with 378 living within in the park. There are many species of eagle, heron, stalk and bee eater as well as kingfishers. Along the river you can frequently see storks, darters, cormorants and fish eagles perching in the trees waiting to sweep in.
