Tsavo East has vast open plains which gives visitors the opportunity to see spectacular herds of elephants and majestic lions. The two parks are divided by the Mombasa to Nairobi road and railway. Tsavo East is the larger of the two parks and consists of woodlands, scrub and open plains. The greenery of this section of the park attracts a variety of wildlife all year round.  Tsavo West has rocky outcrops, lava flows, dense woodlands and open grassland. One of the popular attractions of this section of the park is the Mzima Springs, a series of underwater pools fed by streams underground.

Hippos and crocodiles can be found swimming in the pools and basking in the sun. The springs come complete with an underground viewing chamber where you can see the colourful tropical fish and if you’re lucky maybe even a hippo or crocodile! There is also a long black lava flow called the Shetani Lava flow caused by a volcanic eruption 250 years ago, some visitors choose to climb it and others just take in the sights.

Tsavo’s soil is a rich red in colour, the elephants look red after they have been rolling in it to cool themselves down. You can see animals in the park such as rhino, buffalo, leopard, lion, waterbuck, lesser kudu, giraffe and gerenuk. Outside of Tsavo is a wildlife sanctuary where you can find over 40 species of mammal and 300 of bird.
